It was a classic Australian Christmas morning in 2005 where I found myself standing amongst the rubble of wrapping paper and presents. Scattered everywhere – Plastic. Plastic trains, plastic blocks, plastic trucks, plastic, plastic, PLASTIC. Being a mother of two boys I learned the hard way that those plastic toys don’t last very long, and that I was ultimately replacing them more often than not. A large pile of ‘Christmas’ soon became a large pile of ‘rubbish’.
I decided from that point I wanted better for my kids and that started with me making better purchasing decisions for them. It was through seeking better alternatives I grew an innate desire to create a range of natural toys that would last the test of time. Something I would be proud to give my children and something we could comfortably pass on to someone. Rather than discarding it when our journey with it ends, the toy can be given a second life and bring joy to someone else’s day.
I specified ‘natural toys’ because I also began researching the use of chemicals in plastic toys and I grew concerned for my kids. There’s a study published in January 2021 that stated, “A relevant amount of chemicals used in plastic toy materials may pose a non-negligible health risk to children, calling for more refined investigations and more human- and eco-friendly alternatives.” Knowing babies and toddlers spend more time eating their toys rather than playing with them, I knew I had to ditch plastic for good and create a safer, more sustainable solution that was interactive enough for my boys.
With this, Anamalz was born in 2006 and we launched a range of sustainable, ethical, tactile, and unique toys. These toys were built with traditional materials – wood, plush fabric, rope, all while featuring moveable limbs.
After an amazing reception, in 2007 we launched in Nuremberg Toy Fair, Germany. By 2008, over 1 million toys had been sold in over 30 countries and we’d won 15 Industry Toy Awards, including an Australian International Design Award (a division of Standards Australia). To say I’m proud of Anamalz is an understatement.
In a world that is growing increasingly complicated we love to strip things back to what’s important – nature, simplicity, friends and fun. We want to create little moments that become big memories and capture the natural character of life.
These days they don’t make ‘em like they used to, but we make ‘em like that at Anamalz.
Woodn’t You Know…
We haven’t selected just any type of wood, we’ve chosen to use plantation beech wood. Beechwood is sustainable thanks to the carbon sequestration of living beech trees and the low transportation footprint with widely available local sources. The annual volume of beech harvested is currently lower than new growth, making it more sustainable than woods with a decreasing population.
When it comes to non-plastic toys you can either go wooden or plush, but it’s rare to find a mixture of both.
