UnLike your kitty cat at home, tigers don’t purr, but the roar of a tiger can be heard more than a mile away. They don’t need a mobile phone.
Tigers are magnificent athletes. They can leap 13 feet (4m) and scale walls 6 feet (2m) high. Tigers are great swimmers; they can swim for 3 miles without having to rest, and have been known to swim from one island to another.
The tigers saliva is antiseptic and comes in handy for cleaning their wounds.
Animal: Tiger
Nickname: Stripey
Characteristics:
Tigers are the largest cat in the world. The tiger is immediately recognizable by its orange coat with black stripes. Most tigers have more than 100 stripes. Tiger stripes are like human fingerprints; no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes. The stripes help the tigers hide in tall weeds and grasses - this is called camouflage. If you were to shave the fur from a tiger it would still have stripes.
Height & Weight:
The largest, the Siberian tiger can reach weights exceeding 700 pounds and reach lengths of 10+ feet, and the smallest, the Indonesian or Bali tiger weighing a mere 200 pounds with a total length of 7 ft. I don’t think you would like to pat him on your lap.
Where they live:
In lots of countries in Asia. They live in wet, humid and hot jungles as well as icy cold forests.
What they eat:
Lots and lots of meat. An adult tiger needs about 10 lb (5kgs) of meat a day, but can eat up to 90 lb (45kgs) in one sitting. That’s a lot of sausages. After a large meal, they may not eat again for one to two weeks.
