Animal: Reindeer

Nickname: Rudy

Characteristics:

Reindeers have a short, dark Summer coat and thick, lighter coloured Winter coat. Both male and female have antlers. Baby calves have two little lumps for antlers. As they grow their little lumps turn into antlers. Once a year Reindeer shed their antlers, because it helps Reindeer camouflage in the winter. Reindeer are very strong and can carry a load that weighs as much as they do! (Which is very lucky as they can then help deliver all those presents for Santa !)

Height & Weight:

Reindeer bulls (males) are 3-4 ft high at the shoulder and can weigh up to 400 lbs. The cows (females) are slightly smaller.

Where they live:

Reindeers live on farms in cold. snowy places- like close to the North Pole. Who else do you know that lives at the North Pole? Reindeer can be found in northern parts of North America, Asia, and Europe where it is colder.

What they eat:

They eat grass, tunder, lichens and plants. Reindeer eat 12 pounds a day! If the plants are covered with snow they will shovel or dig with their hoofs. Lichen is made out of algae and fungus. Sounds yuk but it is healthy food for Reindeer.
